Background

On February 10, 2014, S.M. Entertainment revealed the album name and the release date. S.M. also revealed that the concept for "Mr.Mr." is "classy, mystery girl" rather than "sexy" and stated, "We’re going to show a transformation that only Girls' Generation can show." The dance for the title song "Mr.Mr." is choreographed by choreographer Jillian Meyer, who has worked with Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, and Kylie Minogue.
According to an exclusive report with Korean newspaper Osen, during the editing process for the lead single's music video on February 13, a loss of data occurred resulting in a deletion of a portion of the footage. Girls' Generation originally planned to release their title track and music video on the February 19 and kick off their comeback stage on M! Countdown on February 20, 2014 ahead of their album release on the 24th. However, if a re-filming is required to accommodate for the loss of data, insiders are saying that there is a possibility that Girls' Generation's comeback or video release date may be pushed back by two weeks. An S.M. Entertainment representative stated that they are working on recovering the data and engaged in talks concerning the group's comeback schedule.

Composition

The title song, "Mr.Mr.", is an electropop dance song with a R&B sound, produced by The Underdogs, who also worked with Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, and Chris Brown. Mr.Mr. opens like any other electro-pop treat, before evolving into a multi-genre feast with a fuzzy electronic scratches, bouncing electronica embellishments and booming percussion. "Goodbye" has a bouncy, rock-pop production with a sweet melody line and just the slightest hint of a fresh Pharrell production. "Europa" is a slinky piece of disco-pop that keeps a feeling of euphoria alive throughout the track. "Wait a Minute" is a bouncy, harmony-heavy song which also offers bluesy humming plus some jazzy scat singing from the group. "Back Hug" have a simple, snappy R&B production accompanies the gals' sweet crooning with a yummy chorus melody that has the slightest hint of melancholy. Finally, "Soul", of course, is a Korean reproduction of the group's first Chinese hit, however, for one reason or another, all of the songs build off of one another to showcase a varied yet collectively strong selection of tracks indicative of a bright future for the group.
