After a short break Girls' Generation was back with a "Marine Girl" concept; the song, titled "Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie)" (Korean: "소원을 말해봐", literally "Tell Me Your Wish"); the mini album was released digitally on June 22, 2009. This album contains total 6 songs including the lead single of the same title. The first single of the album, "Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)" that is an electronica style pop in European dance genre, features a heavy synthesizer intro, which is in a dreamlike way. The lyric's theme is exposed by the subtitle "Genie", which is the metaphorical symbol of "Goddesses of Luck (Korean: 행운의 여신). "Etude" is a pop song. "Girlfriend" is a 1980s disco style. "Boyfriend" is a dance-pop song, bringing electro elements. "My Child" is with a piano played intro in a gospel and classical style. "One Year Later" is a soft pop ballad duet song by Jessica and Onew (the leader of SHINee). The duet was also featured in MBC TV drama Pasta.
The title track was composed by Anne Judith Wik, Robin Jenssen, Ronny Svendsen, Nermin Harambasic and Fridolin Nordso (Dsign Music), the song was originally titled "I Just Wanna Dance". After SM Entertainment had purchased the rights to the song, the lyrical story of the song was re-written with additional composition by Yoo Young-jin, and the melody arranged by Yoo Han-jin.The original song, I Just Wanna Dance, is a song about ones lust to dance. However, in the re-worked version, the song discusses someone granting the wishes of their partner. Originally, the group recorded the song as "I Just Wanna Wish," and was rehearsed to by the girls, however, the song was quickly revised shortly before release, and changed to "Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)." Differences in the demo version, and the official, is most notably the presence of an ad-libbed bridge performed by Jessica, and the second chorus in which “Sowoneul Malhaebwa" (Tell Me Your Wish) is replaced by "I just wanna wish." As well as these, differences between this version and the Japanese version compared to the Korean version can be heard. In the Korean version, the outro features the girls playing around singing “Sowoneul Malhaebwa" whereas, in the other version, this is not heard.On June 26, 2009, Girls' Generation's comeback performance was recorded on KBS's Music Bank. The group then had their return performances on MBC's Music Core and SBS's Inkigayo on June 27 and 28, 2009. Girls' Generation's 2nd mini-album Genie was released on June 29, 2009. Their first win for their single "Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie)" was obtained at the July 10, 2009 episode of KBS Music Bank. Their second award was claimed at the July 12, 2009 episode of SBS Inkigayo. The group finished promotions for "Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie)" in August 2009.

The teaser video was released at 9:20 p.m. (KT) on June 19, 2009. Later, the original video was released on June 26, 2009. In the music video, Yoona appears first sitting in a large lamp, the other members sitting around her. The music video cuts back and forth between the group performing the choreography and scenes from three separate rooms occupied by three different members each. Yoona, Yuri and Jessica are in a large pink bedroom. Tiffany, Taeyeon and Sunny are in a dance club or disco bar. While Seohyun, Sooyoung and Hyoyeon are in a room there is a large cake from which Seohyun pops out. The girls wear white uniforms and perform on a long runway-like stage with a large heart in the background, while on the other they are in khaki uniforms with the words "GIRLS' GENIE" in the background. The music video frequently shows the girls interacting with the camera and with arms that sometimes extend from either side of the screen to give the impression that the girls a interacting with the viewer personally. The stage sequences have heavy, flashy lights and moving spotlights to give strong and bright effects.

Controversy
The physical release of Tell Me Your Wish (Genie) was delayed by SM Entertainment in order to redo the album art. Notable changes include removing imperial images of a World War II Japanese A6M Zero fighter and a slightly modified eagle insignia of the Nazi Party on the cover. As a result, The EP was officially released 4 days later on June 29, 2009.
Other versions and plagiarism Issues
Issues of plagiarism were caused by Uzbek singer Dineyra's song "Raqsga Tushgin". It was revealed that although the release of her song preceded the release of Girls' Generation's second mini-album, the Uzbekistan singer's song was recorded without obtaining proper permission from Universal Music, thus plagiarising Tell Me Your Wish (Genie).On May 19, 2010 Dutch singer Nathalie Makoma released her second single named "I Just Wanna Dance." However, Nathalie sings the original English lyrics that were written for the song.
On June 3, 2011 British singer C.J. Lewis released an English Version of Genie.
